Concept of editing

The idea for editing in movie first began in 1904. Back than people didn't have the confidence in editing their believes the they believe it would confuse the audience.  Director soon started editing their movies by doing jump cuts and changing the positions with the camera. The goal for the editing concept so that the audience would feel like they were in the looking through some ones eyes. Directors wanted audience to feels immersion as much as possible during the movies. This also means that the camera had a lot freer movie movement when recording a scene and even change location. Back in 1904 most movies would be told in only one location but ever since editing came about things changed and people found news ways of editing and making a seen look better and represent something just by the edit alone it made new job role for the movie industry as there would now be post production editors after all the recoding for a move or TV was all said and done.

Most editors also were female at the time being as they had small hands which allow them to grab film reel cutting bits in and out while males found it just silently hard it was enough for the time being for females have gotten the job as their main. Its only when cameras new cameras were developed which didn't use film reel when their was a change and soon the job of camera man become natural. Over time their there is always heavy a equipment to carry such as camera as of late the role of cameraman have slightly been aimed to men.

Task 2 identify and analyse the impact specific editing techniques have of the filmmaking process and the target audience

Continuity is the scene of a movie or TV show flow making look like nothing has changed the the camera moving camera zoomed or zoomed out. This also mean that time has not seemed to pass what so ever. This adds to realise in a scene no no time has passed making the just build and follow as if you were in the scene but moving around.  Continuity is used so that the audience doesn't miss out anything important and to have a full detail in the scene. An example of this would be the movie fast and furious 7 when two character who talking to each other and tension builds to result in giant fight between the two.

The 180 degree rule is beneficial to a movie scene or TV show as keeps the audience only forced on side of a instead moving the moving the camera any any where over the 180 degree line. This used to keep focus on two character at time without the camera being split screen which is prefered.

Cutting to the beat is a scene of a movie of TV cutting out some of the time in a scene to get the to the point. This so that tension can be built fast and is used to get the audience excited and be to suspenseful for what is happening on screen.

Shot reverse shot is used by the camera changing position and mostly used in a conventions between two people or more. This so that you get a persons facial expression to what someone saying in the scene. If shot  reverse shot never was used then a lot convention in movies and TV shows would be plain and simple.  This would be because face expression shows a lot of a character's behaviour in situations and can also have some kind of personal identification.  This is because you might feel the  the same way as a character does if you were in their position in the conversation. An example of this would be in the movie Juno where she sates to her parent that she's pregnant. In this scene of the movie you see the parent's are clearly scared and worried for their daughter and the don't think Juno knows what she really want to do about her pregnancy.

montages are used showing time passes by this used by adding music along with fade in and fade out shots so location of the scene can also be changed.  An example of this would be the in the disney movie Hercules where the main character Herceles goes on adventure to find out where he truly be longs in the world. This so the audience can now what has happening in short time instead of just time passing by just one scene to another montages build up what has been happening during that time.

Jump cuts are cut and out so that it gets to the main focus of what the scene is trying to accomplish this is used by getting the main point across making the focus of the scene last less but faster build up to the scene.

Cutaways are used to cut out the main focus of a scene and instead focus the scene some where else. In spider man 2 spider is training to stop a train which has hundreds of people on board. The scene changes from spider man trying to stop the train to seeing citizens in the train terrified and scared of what might happen as hundred of citizens may die from the train crash since there is no bridge ahead to where the train is going.

Fade in and fade outs are to show that time has passed or time has gone back. This is often used in conclusion to a scene or if a character is reminded of a past memory. This used so that is not wasted and the fade in and outs are to shows that time has clearly changed so the audience doesn't get confused when watching a movie or TV show. An example of this would  be in the movie Scooby- do when Velma is reminded of how she and the Scooby-doo gang use to be in the past. When she starts talking about it the image fades along with her voice showing that the setting and atmosphere have complexly changed.

Parallel editing are two scene which are happening exactly the same time but in different locations. This type of editing can be used in scene of movies when two people are having a conversation on the phone and get the people facial expression even if they are not speaking to each other directly. An example of this would be final destination 2 where two of the character speaking to one another across the phone. This to show important scenes at one's which can't be missed as it would be important to the movie.

Dissolves are two perfectly still images which are like graphic on match action but in this case it just two still images which can be compared two each other symbolising a deep meaning behind it which can leave mystery for the audience to interpret.

Translations wipes are another editing technique which allows to were two switch from without a montage it just switches to a different scene.

Graphic match is the comparison to two things in a scene. This is so the audience gets a representation of what happening is mostly used to make sense of the scene. This is also used often in the psychological genre making the audience think hard of the comparison in the scene. An example of this would be in the movie Beyond when the instructor is telling his students how to play the instruments every time he movies his hands how or low his students start playing this so the point can come across that timing is everything when comes to playing an instrument.

short film editing techniques

This is my editechiques video
My team used a wide range of techniques such the shot reverse shot, tracking shot, parallel shot

Evaluation Of Editing Techniques

Before editing our film we needed our video film of our four-minute movie to be downloaded onto the computer in order to start editing. The website we used for this was Mega.com which allowed use to download all our video clips which my team took to make the four minute movie.

When my team and me finished recording our four-minute film we needed do just do our postproduction. In order for us to start editing our movie putting sound affect, different lighting, intro and more we need a program. The program that we used for editing was final cut pro which used to edit the four-minute film. The reason for editing is to add more to the movie and combine video clips which my team recorded separately. This to make the four minute look better four our audience instead just being raw video which would simply be just plain boring.

Once final cut pro was open all I needed to do was to apply the movie clips to final cut pro. Once I had done that I would be able to start editing the clips however I wanted. I did this by clicking on a big arrow pointing downwards this lead me to find the video clips on my computer in one of my files called download where all the video clips for my team’s four minute movie was.

As there was a lot of footage to work with I needed to cut down on some of the movie clips, as I thought not all the video clips were necessary as it was only suppose to be a four-minute movie. By clicking on one of the movie clips I could watch the video clip before deciding if I would add it to final cut pro for me to edit it and put it in the four minute movie.

Once I’d decided on what video clip I wanted in the movie I clicked on import selected.  This would allow me to edit the video clip on final cut pro were it was saved for storage. This was just in case if I ever were to ever accidently delete it video clip a back up just case something went wrong and for example the computer shut down all of a sudden.

Once I had gone onto import selected it would be saved onto final cut pro and the video clips uploaded would always be on upper left hand side to the main hub of final cut pro.  This use is short the time it takes to find a clip when instead it right be right in front as soon as you go onto final cut pro which shorten the time it takes to find a video clip and put it in into the four minute movie.

After the video clips were saved onto final cut pro I only needed to drag the videos into the final cut pro timeline so I can t finally make a movie and start editing. I first started by make an intro. The intro only consisted of the four-minute movie title, which was called The Happy Family.  I added an intro so I can introduce the audience and for the audience to know the name of the short film. I added a title by clicking on a T icon, which stood for titles.  The title browser is on the right hand side of the cut pro, which is in the middle. I decided with a basic title that didn’t stand out, as I couldn’t find anything, which felt like it had the look of being scary or mysterious, as I wanted the title to contrast with the genre of the movie, which there wasn’t.   Once I had chosen the title I dragged it in the final cut pro time line first.  Then when I clicked on it another hub showed up which allowed me to write anything I want that when I wrote the name of the title The Happy Family.

What I made up for the title was instead adding a hollow and creepy soundtrack called ambient effect 1.  I chose this sound as I thought this matched the theme of the movie and set the mood as soon as the movie started with just the soundtrack alone. Other then that I couldn’t think of anything else to add to the intro.  The sound used for editing is in the same place as the title browser but is instead the icon is the music note.  I also died to end the movie with the same sound as the movie got even darker by the end movie.

As I wanted to add some sort of suspense but not make the movie none realist I didn’t want to add much when it came to sound. The movie isn’t heavy dialog but I wanted the audience to feel the characters emotion when hearing the characters speak to one another. In the movie there is a time skip. What I decided to do was for the movie to have a short what I did was have a sudden black out with a clock in the ground symbolizing that time has gone by.  I did this by dragging the file bell tower in the sound and music category on top of the video clip of the black out.  This gave a sudden mystery and make the audience wonder why put black out in the middle of the four minute short movie.

Once I had finished editing the recorded movie clips parts I wanted in the movie along with adding the titles and sound effects. I uploaded the video by selecting all the clips of video at once. When I had than that I clicked on the top left hand corner of the desktop I clicked file and went to share than my account so I can upload the video to YouTube once it was complete. Once on YouTube it was public for everyone to watch on youtube.

The history of editing

The first film to ever to be created was in 1888 and the short film was called Round hay Garden. The director of the film was called inventor Louis Le Prince first ever film director. The camera used was recording in motion picture. There was no colour or audio in it. So they decided to add in music as its replacement. This movie is important because if it not were for these movies wouldn’t even exist to present-day which is a great source of entertainment. TV shows wouldn’t have been made not even TV it’s self a lot of the media started off just from one movie making something so much bigger and creating so many things which we have to day. Which are cinemas, TV, phones and computers all of these things most of the human population uses to day. That’s why it’s important it keeps us all connected with each other as human beings.

How scenes were cut before the digital age?  Of course this was the editors job role if there was a specific scenes that the director didn’t want in the movie the director would simply ask for the to cut it out of the movie. To some people editing is everything when it comes to a movie. This would because of reason such of an character failing to give the right dialog.an editor can simply cut out scenes and retry it again as many times that it is needed. Editing a movie can make look really professional and makes the film look flawless. How editors use to cut scenes out of a movie was to cut spate shots then putting them together could in fact make a story. With the power of editing you can do so much more things. Not can you cut away scenes you can also make a scenes last longer and speed up a scene. But why would you editors do this? It’s simple because it can create intense moments and has a greater impact to the audience then other scenes shown on film. the operator

Genre theory

Audiences have all have different tastes when comes to movies and TV shows and one of the things that people most appeal when comes to these would be genre. Depending on the genre of a movie or a TV show people will either like or dislike it simply by it's genre. The reason for this would be that with genre there certain things that would be contained in a specific genre. An example would be in a romance genre there is always going to be a couple which are both male and female or sometime even couples of the same gender this would be called generic conventions.  Audience likes to know what they are going to watch before they can bother watching a movie going in blind. Some people hate horror and most often going go in blind watching a movie or TV show without knowing any thing about it. That is one of the reason why movie trailers are made in order for the audience to get an idea of what they'll be watching.

No body is simply going to buy cinema tickets without knowing what they are watching.  By having genres in movies and TV shows it provides variety for people if there only ever was one genre in a movie a lot of people would stop watching movies all together. There are only so many movies that  are similar thanks to having the same genre. People love originality in movies and by not too much which why genre even exists to begin with.

Genre would also contain in music video as well which also be looked as appealing or non  appealing as some them do have there very own personality as some music video do tell a narrative story with fictional characters.
